“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” ~Proverb 18:21
This verse contrasts the old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Not only is this false for obvious reasons, but it is also dead wrong for another reason. The words of others can hurt you, but the words you speak have the power to hurt both others and yourself. Although our thoughts can sometimes be wretched, it is what we speak that is more harshly judged. The Holy Spirit has the power to filter your thoughts into what God wants you to say. When we reject the Holy Spirit’s guidance in how we speak, we hurt our standing with God due to our conscious rebellion to His teaching.
With the words we speak and the way be act, we are to embody the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patient, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law, as it says in Galatians 5:22. As the Lord has revealed to me time and time again, “By these fruits, the righteous will be judged.” If we sow words and deeds that embody these fruits, we are building up an unfathomable inheritance for when we go to be with Jesus in the Eternal City.
Unfortunately, there are those who use their words to tear people down and sow discord. For these individuals, it will be impossible for them to stand on the day of judgment unless they humble themselves to faith in Jesus Christ. I pray each day for people like this because I know that the condition of their heart may result in eternal damnation. As it says in Luke 6:45 through the words of Jesus, “Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Thus, I implore you to be quick to listen and slow to speak (as the Proverbs says) and weigh each thing you say with the eternal consequences in mind.
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”” ~Romans 10:9-11 NIV
With your mouth, you declare the truth that Jesus is the Messiah. With your mouth, you declare the inner belief of your heart and show that Jesus truly has a home with you. If you have never made this decision for Jesus Christ, it is not too late for you and God can count you among the righteous upon your decision to live for Him.
I pray that all people who find this site and do not know Jesus will leave the site on the path toward the Salvation through Him because of His Life, Death, and Resurrection that has redeemed us and forgiven all of our sins.
May God go with you and bless you in the abundance of His Truth.
